CARDIFF BALL HOCKEY CLUB

ABOUT

The most important thing to know is that ball hockey isn’t ice hockey. There’s no skating, no heavy equipment, and no checking into boards. Players run on foot and only need minimal equipment. This makes ball hockey far less intimidating for new players, while still teaching all the key hockey skills.

As players get older, the game develops with them. Younger children focus on fun, confidence, and basic skills, while older players build on those foundations as their ability and understanding grow.

Our Ball Hockey program launches 15th January 2026!

WHAT IS THE BEST AGE TO START?

The short answer is simple: there’s no single “right” age to start. Every child is different. Some kids are eager to jump in as early as 5 or 6, while other families prefer to wait until their child feels more confident.

Both approaches are perfectly fine. Instead of focusing on age, here are a few signs that may show your child is ready to join Cardiff Ball Hockey.

THEY ENJOY BEING ACTIVE

Ball hockey involves plenty of movement—running, stopping, turning, and playing with a stick and ball.

If your child loves to stay active and burn off energy, ball hockey is a great outlet. The level of activity is similar to sports like football or rugby, with lots of continuous play.

Team environment

Ball hockey is a team sport, usually played 4-a-side or 5-a-side, which means everyone gets involved. Your child will have lots of chances to participate while learning about teamwork, sharing, and sportsmanship.

They don’t need to understand all the rules straight away—that comes with time. If they’re excited to play and learn alongside others, they’re ready.

Most importantly, when it comes to Cardiff Ball Hockey, there’s no pressure to be “good enough.”

Every child develops at their own pace. Our focus is on creating a fun, inclusive environment where kids can stay active, make friends, learn new skills, and enjoy being part of a team. That’s what youth sport is all about.
